After multiple surgeries, chronic nerve pain, and other losses that resulted in grief, depression and financial struggles, I was headed for a life of pain meds and government disability. One of my doctors told me to “reevaluate my expectations for life” and I knew that I needed to learn how to be resilient.
Most advice I found was cliched. It didn’t give me the practical answers to help me succeed professionally while I was struggling personally. I believed, like many do, that resilience is saved for huge life events and as such, I was looking to the superstar athletes or business icons for insights. The problem was, I was just trying to get out of bed and serve my clients. I couldn’t relate.
I realize now that everyday resilience is actually more important than Big-R-Resilience. If you can’t deal with day-to-day challenges the accumulated stress poses a higher-risk to a company than when a team member experiences monumental adversities.
Stress left unchecked creates new obstacles and obstacles, not properly dealt with will ultimately cause adversity in the form of job loss, burn out or a miserable life.
That’s why I started the Resiliency Ninja movement. To inspire professionals to master everyday resilience so that challenges don’t stall progress and instead will propel profits!
